Our June meeting was held at Claude Sevigny's shop.
Claude showed us how he deals with turning spalted wood from his property.
Claude explaining. Note the spalted wood mounted on the lathe.
Spalted wood tends to have varying hardness in the same timber which causes a variety of problems for the turner, the most annoying being tearout holes.
Members in Claude's shop. (Claude makes mostly architectural work - stairs being his speciality. Work is planned on CAD first then wood to customers specifications is processed and assembled.)
Sampling of Claude's turnings. Mostly from spaleted timber which he harvests from the surrounding property.
Chips a flying. Claude getting into it.
Close up of the business end of Claude's bowl gouge. Note the double bevel grind.
